Adverse Weather Conditions

Monday 9th January, 2012

Epsom Downs racecourse are pleased to report that repair work to The Duchess’s Stand roof will commence later this week.

Three tower cranes will be used to allow access to the damaged area, which will be repaired and made waterproof. Alongside this a survey of the section will be undertaken to determine exactly what caused the damage to the roof.

Whilst this work is undertaken the Duchess’s Stand is deemed to be a construction area and therefore no access to the public is permitted, however, events will continue to be staged in the Queen’s Stand.

With favourable weather conditions it is anticipated that this work should take no more than a week.

The area around the racecourse is now clear of the non harmful insulation material that was blown from the roof during last weeks extreme weather conditions.

Epsom Downs would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the necessary road closures that were enforced by the emergency services last week.

Thursday 5th January, 2012

Due to on going adverse weather conditions, and after discussions with local authority safety officers and construction experts, regretfully the wedding fair that was due to take place at the racecourse on this Sunday, January 8th has had to be postponed.

The continuing adverse weather has prevented a full assessment of the damage caused to the roof of the Duchess’s Stand by the strong winds earlier in the week and in the interests of safety, it has been decided that until a full survey has taken place, no public events should take place on the racecourse.

This survey will be undertaken as soon as the weather allows and a further statement will follow.

Following severe weather conditions and turbulent winds at Epsom Downs Racecourse this morning, the Duchess's Stand roof has been damaged. There were no injuries to anyone but as a result and after liaising with the emergency services, the racecourse has been evacuated and all non essential members of staff sent home. The emergency services are on site and are monitoring the situation.
